Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in Consumer Financial Protection Bureau v. Community Financial Services Association of America, Limited that will help uphold consumer protections for individuals directly impacted across the country. JustLeadershipUSA President/CEO and JustUS Coordinating Council founder, DeAnna Hoskins, issued the following statement:
“JustLeadershipUSA and the JustUS Coordinating Council stand with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and support today’s ruling. Since the signing of The Dodd Frank Act by President Obama in 2010, over $19 billion has been returned to consumers across the country — including to communities, families, and individuals impacted by the criminal legal system. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is vital to continuing to protect those who are working to regain economic mobility.
Today’s ruling … is an example of the whole-of-government approach necessary to create equity for individuals and communities most impacted.
“From payday lending to predatory auto lots and junk fees associated with for-profit corporations used in carceral settings, the CFPB has shown ongoing dedication to elevating the needs of consumers who endure the disproportionate impact of an economy rooted in slavery and Jim Crow laws. Ensuring protections and accountability are in place for consumers who are directly impacted not only safeguards rights, it also allows for full participation in society through financial literacy and access to lending and capital.
“Today’s ruling helps prevent dangerous rollbacks to regulatory safeguards, combats ongoing predatory lending and fees and is an example of the whole-of-government approach necessary to create equity for individuals and communities most impacted. We call on the Federal government to continue taking up additional measures to ensure the most vulnerable communities are protected and ensure the CFPB continues the fight to protect consumer rights for all.”
