Emerging Leaders™

Bringing leadership training for directly impacted people to a city near you.

Emerging Leaders™ (EL) is an IACET-certified training program for directly impacted people organized in collaboration with a community-based partner. Participants will have demonstrated a commitment to systemic criminal and/or juvenile justice reform.

EL creates a space for directly impacted grassroots activists to become strong leaders at the forefront of efforts to drive meaningful change for creating opportunities for themselves, for their communities and beyond.

Over the course of two days, five key concepts are covered:

Leadership is rooted in the relationships we build with others. This session covers the core principles of Breakthrough Action Leadership, where leaders are challenged to see themselves not only as leaders, but are also able to acknowledge the impact they are having on others through their leadership. Through such acknowledgment, leaders are capable of transitioning from accepting personal responsibility through self reflection to building collective leadership in others.

When we hear stories from others that land with us as about us, we are capable of being moved from compassion and sympathy into mobilization and action. This session introduces leaders to strategic methods of communicating their story and how their story can transform into the collective story of “us,” where shared values are uplifted to target problems impacting others whose lived experiences of those problems become solutions warranting implementation. Through VPSA, leaders learn how to craft their stories into powerful messages that lead to real policy change.

At the root of biased and discriminatory systems are people upholding harmful policies. Those impacted by these harmful policies are often so close to the problem that their experience and proximity allow for them to have a solution that removes the harm and replaces it with policies that uplift people and communities. In this session leaders use their experience to understand the intricate components of legislation, policy solving, and building power to redress policy harms.

To build grassroots power within communities requires understanding the landscape of power and influence by  learning to develop strategies that mobilize and organize others into action. This session introduces leaders to key strategies for generating a blueprint for building momentum and power towards social justice change.

Leaders are at their best when they have the capacity to meet the demands of their leadership. This session highlights the components of individual and collective capacity and provides leaders with an evaluative scope to determine their own individual leadership depth and reach to determine when to say yes and or when to say no.

We provide trainees with toolkits for advocacy, organizing, and media and social media engagement. Trainees are connected to the Leading with Conviction network, including leaders in their own subject matter fields and geographic areas, through the Engage social media platform.

Communities have the option of a 3- or 6-month post-training engagement to receive capacity building support and technical assistance.
