JustLeadershipUSA Speaks Out Against Grants Pass Decision for Persons Who are Unhoused

June 28, 2024

Today, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson that will have dire consequences for the basic notion that housing is a human right and that will contribute to criminalizing homelessness. JustLeadershipUSA (JLUSA) President/CEO and JustUS Coordinating Council (JCC) founder, DeAnna Hoskins, issued the following statement:

“JustLeadershipUSA and the JustUS Coordinating Council stand with our community today in rejecting the Supreme Court’s ruling undercutting protections against cruel and unusual punishment for the unhoused in both the City of Grants Pass, Oregon, and nationwide. In a time where individuals impacted by the criminal legal system are seeing ongoing attacks against access to basic human needs and rights, today’s ruling continues to reinforce this country’s ongoing overreliance on incarceration and racist policies that enshrine inequity.

“Housing is a basic human need that must be afforded to everyone. The data is clear: Individuals impacted by the criminal legal system are at least 10 times more likely to be homeless than the general public. As such, today’s ruling is especially concerning as JLUSA and the JCC continue the fight against the criminalization of basic human needs that continues to impact those living in poverty.

“Today’s ruling only complicates the whole-of-government approach it will take to adequately address the policies perpetuating the ongoing lack of access to housing faced by those impacted by the criminal legal system. We call on the Federal government, Congress, and communities across the country to advance common-sense, supportive, housing-first solutions aimed at creating access and reducing bias. Only then will we see a society that everyone can call home.”
