In an article from Outlier Media, Cecilia Zavala (Leading with Conviction™ 2023) speaks about barriers to voting faced by people incarcerated in Michigan.
“This may come as a surprise, but many people in Michigan jails can and do vote — legally. Advocates want local clerks to make the process easier for people in jail across the state, including the more than 1,000 people locked up in Wayne County Jail. …
“Cecilia Zavala, acting co-executive director of Nation Outside, an organization led by people impacted by the criminal justice system, said many of the people in pretrial detention simply cannot afford bail.”
“So they’re in there really because they’re too poor to get out, and that poverty impacts their ability to vote.”
