Sen. Keturah Herron joins Louisville Community Safety Commission along with other local change agents

“After around 200 applications were submitted to Metro Government, the newly created Community Safety Commission was narrowed down to 24 people, who were unveiled on [July 31].

“As issues of gun violence, domestic violence, substance use, and residents’ lack of trust in police persist in the Metro, that’s where the group of change agents comes in to act on the phrase ‘community problems require community solutions.’

Community problems require community solutions.

“‘I think one of the biggest things is that it’s a group of people that basically gets to advise the mayor,’ said Sen. Keturah Herron [Leading with Conviction™ 2019].

“Sen. Herron is joined by leaders in a range of sectors, from nonprofit to education and criminal justice. They’ll oversee two of the mayor’s current initiatives: the local consent decree, Community Commitment, and the Safe Louisville Violence Reduction Plan, which aims to curb the city’s violent crime by 15% each year.

“This group will regularly receive reports from Louisville Metro about the plan. They will also monitor the plan’s progress and provide feedback and advice.

“Their tasks will be similar for the reform agreement, but the commission will work closely with the city’s soon-to-be hired independent monitor, who will oversee LMPD. The monitor will give regular updates on the department’s progress in policing, policies and transparency, and receive feedback from the group.”
