Kyle Giddings celebrates Colorado’s decision not to increase prison beds

January 26, 2026

Kyle Giddings (Leading with Conviction™ 2024): “In times like this, it can be hard to find anything worth celebrating. But on Wednesday, something historic happened. For the first time in the 25-year history of CCJRC, the Joint Budget Committee said enough—and denied the Department of Corrections’ request for 788 new prison beds.

“That has never happened before.

It’s clear: expanding prisons cannot be the default response.

“At a time when Colorado is facing cuts to higher education, healthcare, and essential services, it’s clear: expanding prisons cannot be the default response. The Department of Corrections must step up and safely manage the population with the tools it already has.

“Discretionary parole is down. Nearly 5,000 people are past their parole eligibility dates inside Colorados prisons. Caseworkers and teachers are being pulled into guard duty instead of doing the work that actually helps people change their lives.

“The door to prison expansion is no longer automatic. Now it’s time to do the real work.”
