Steven “Humble” Mangual is Senior Intervention Manger for New York City-based Common Justice, an alternative to incarceration and crime victim services organization for people charged with violent felony offenses. He is also the Latino Affairs Producer/Co-host for “On The Count: The Prison and Criminal Justice Report,” a 60-minute talk, news, and interview program featuring criminal and social justice subjects on radio station WBAI, 99.5 FM, airing weekly on Saturdays from 11:00 am until 12 pm. Steven holds an Associate’s Degree in Human Services from Bronx Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Lehman College. His passion has been health education and advocacy as well as criminal justice.
He started his career in 1997 within the New York State Department of Corrections while serving a 14 year sentence. He worked as a case manager, social service provider and Hepatitis C educator, advocating for people living with HIV/AIDS inside prison, and trained peer educators preparing for reintegration. During his own incarceration Steven also went through spiritual awakenings and was involved in religious and spiritual programs as a member of The Nation of Islam and Liberation Theology.
